How old does my child have to be to play baseball or softball? Your son or daughter need to be 5 years old as of April 30th, 2012.
During registration, my son was assigned to a league below the level I would have expected The registration system defaults your son to the league he would fall into based on his date of birth. However, the actual breakdown is as follows:
The league will place younger baseball players (T-Ball, Instructional) in divisions by grade instead of age.
For older divisions the breakdown is:
Majors - all 6th graders, all 12 year olds and 11 year olds that have been drafted into the Majors AAA - All 5th graders, remaining 11 year olds and 10 year olds that have been drafted into AAA AA - All 4th graders, remaining 10 year olds and all 9 year olds
What does my son or daughter need for equipment? The only equipment required is a glove. WYBSA provides balls, bats, helmets, shirts and hats. You may also want to get a pair of rubber cleats but these are always optional and really not needed at all with the younger kids
How long is the season? The season starts April with practices and ends before school lets out in June.
How many practices are there in a week? Practices are dependent on the coach. Younger players may only practice prior to the season beginning and then just play the games. Older player generally will practice at least twice a week.
How many games are there during the week? Generally there will be 2 games during the week with one of those on a weekday and one on Saturday. Depending on the schedule you may only have 1 game one week and then 3 games a following week.
When will my child know what team he/she is on? WYBSA requests all coaches contact players within one of week of being placed on a team. Generally older kids are contacted by late March and T-Ball players by early April
When will schedules be posted? Schedules are usually release approximately 1 week prior to the start of the season. My child is a natural athlete can he/she play up a level? Children are placed in leagues based on their age and they may not play up.
My child would have been playing at the next level this year until the age change was implemented, can he be grandfathered in and still play at the next level? No, your son or daughter will have to play in the age bracket based on his/her age as of April 30th 2007.
My son/daughter is really unhappy with their coach, what should I do? Talk to the coach first, remember they are also a mother/father first and may be able to resolve it. Should this not work please contact the player agent next. The player agent will try to resolve any conflicts and will follow up with board should there be any remaining issues.
