KING PHILIP 15’S WIN HOCKOMOCK SUMMER LEAGUE, FREETOWN INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
King Philip’s 15-year-old all-star baseball team has won its first Hockomock Summer League championship.  King Philip compiled an 8 win 4 loss regular season record to earn entry into the Hocomock Summer League playoffs. The Hockomock Summer League 15 year old division consists of 14 area teams. Three days prior to the championship, King Philip had won the Freetown Invitational 15 year old wood bat tournament in Freetown, Massachusetts.

King Philip won its first playoff game trimming Mansfield 7 - 4. This victory was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Nick Caliendo and Mike Rose, along with a complete game hurled by Chris Horne.  King Philip survived the semifinal game by hanging on to beat a tough Easton team 3 - 2 (Note: This Easton team had won the Babe Ruth EMASS State championship the preceding 2 years and as 12 year olds were finalists in the Cal Ripkin Baseball New England championship game) in Easton.  Easton had the tying runner on second  base in the final frame when  KP executed a double play to end the game. Bobby Zahner went the distance on the mound for King Philip.

Advancing to the Championship game, King Philip faced Franklin’s 15 year old team at Fletcher Field in Franklin on August 3rd.  King Philip stormed out to an early 4 - 0 lead after 3 innings. The early lead was in large part due to the bats of King Philips Erik Martino, Nick Caliendo and Chris Horne.  Mike Rose, King Philip’s starting pitcher, held off a Franklin rally in the seventh to record a complete game 4 - 1 win and brought KP the Hockomock Summer League championship.

King Philip’s 15 year olds also won Freetown’s annual 15-year-old wood bat tournament held July 28th thru July 31st.  Consecutive victories against Milford, Dartmouth and Sakonnet (R.I.), earned KP the right to advance to the semi finals where they were victorious against a tough Westport (2004’s champion) team 7 - 0.  King Philip won the Freetown Invitational championship Sunday July 31st by beating Lakeville 7 - 0 behind a complete game one hit performance by Mike Rose.
